About This Item

MP3 Audio CD. Scaramouche by Rafael Sabatini ? Adventuresome Tales During the French Revolution

When you think of sword fighting heroes, you mostly tend to remember Dumas' Count of Monte Cristo or the Three Musketeers. Rafael Sabatini, however, brings a fresh perspective through one of his most famous novels and possibly one of the most outstanding historic novels and tales of adventure associated with the early romantic period: Scaramouche.

Scaramouche is an extremely complex, multi-dimensional and highly skilled character that is portrayed in the story by a young lawyer by the name of Moreau. A cynic at first, Moreau becomes an actor, sword master and exemplary orator, dazzling his opponents with his exceptional fencing skills, and eventually taking on the name and role of Scaramouche, a roguish buffoon from the Commedia dell'Arte.

Most experts would consider Moreau/Scaramouche to be one of the most complex characters you can find in any novel associated with the French Revolution, the story itself depicting the complex political landscape of the time in great detail, while Sabatini's style remains quite flowery and extravagant, but is never described as being dated.

Moreau's remarkable transformation is shown in perspective with the fast paced of the story and the quickly evolving circumstances ? which often force the hero to change sides and fight for those he had previously considered his foes. Although driven by revenge, love is also in the cards for Scaramouche, the novel telling of his pursuit of a beautiful lady by the name of Aline de Kercadiou.

Sabatini is ranked among some of the greatest adventure novel writers of all time, including Dumas, Robert Louis Stevenson and Baroness Orczy. Scaramouche is considered to be his masterpiece, and according to many people, the most engaging and well-written adventure and historical novel of all time.

Synopsis

Once he was André-Louis Moreau, a lawyer raised by nobility, unconcerned with the growing discontent among France’s lower class—until his best friend is mercilessly struck down by a member of the aristocracy. Now, he is Scaramouche. Speaking out against the unjust French Government, he takes refuge with a nomadic band of acting improvisers where he assumes the role of Scaramouche The Clown—a comic figure with a very serious message... Set during the French Revolution, this novel of swashbuckling romance is also a thought-provoking commentary on class, inequality, and the individual’s role in society—a story that has become Rafael Sabatini’s enduring legacy.
