About This Item
The First UK printing published by John Lehmann, London in 1950. The BOOK is in Very Good condition. There is some pushing to the spine ends with some light bumping to the lower corners. Some ghosting to the orange colouring of the spine but the green faux label remains bright. The covers are lightly marked in places. There is light toning of the text block and end-papers with some slight creasing to the pages in places. A couple of pages have some small splash marks to the page edges. The WRAPPER is complete and is in near Fine condition. A little toning to the spine with some mild edge-wear affecting the spine ends. The edges are a little nicked with one small closed tear to the upper cover. The rear panel remains remarkably clean for its age. The JOHN MINTON designed wrapper artwork looks very striking in the removable Brodart archival protector. The wrapper is incredibly scarce to find in any condition and this is certainly one of the nicest examples that we have ever handled to date. One of the iconic wrapper designs of the 1950s! The book has been Inscribed and Signed by the Author to the title page: 'To Opal, from Roland Camberton with best wishes and affection, October-1950'. Roland Camberton (aka Henry Cohen) wrote only two novels before disappearing into relative obscurity. This was despite winning the prestigious Somerset Maugham Award for the title 'Scamp'. The author Iain Sinclair has been largely responsible for championing the recent revival in Camberton's works which are now back in print. A highly collectible and very scarce title to find with such attributes. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
