Early conservation efforts to save the Zululand wilderness from the predations of early hunters. With a thousand tons of ivory alone shipped out of Durban harbour, the fruits of the slaughter of 20,000 elephants between the 1820s and 1880s, imminent total destruction was thwarted by the establishment of the first game reserves in the 1890s.
