John Galen Howard was the architect who was appointed to oversee the implementation of the Bernard design for the UC Berkeley campus in the early years of the 20th century and was a figure in the Arts and Crafts movement in America. Inscribed by the author: "Dr. Ray McAfee from a grateful friend, Mary Mills Patrick. May, 1928." A book that attempts to place the poetess Sappho in the context of her historical surroundings. Patrick was a feminist educator and the founder of the Constantinople Woman's College, which became the leading center for higher education for women in Turkey. She managed to keep it open through the Balkan Wars, the Turkish Revolution, and World War I. She firmly believed in and advocated the equality of nations, the equality of the sexes, and higher education for women.
