About This Item
The New Age Press, 1908. Good. First state binding: brown paper wrappers with black lettering and the 'three decorative colon devices' to front wrapper (Laurence A86a). The copy has been bound in black cloth boards for Wigan Free Public Library, however, it has not been trimmed and retains its original dimensions - 16.5 x 10.7cm - as well as the untrimmed edges (fore- and bottom) (Laurence, A86a). 12mo, pp. 104 + (2) adverts. Black cloth, stamped gilt lettering to spine, faded. Rubbed, wear to extremities and loss to head and tail of spine. Edges dusty. Illustrated endpapers. Library label to front pastedown, blind stamps to front wrapper, title page and final page, and stamp to copyright page. Else, internally clean and well preserved, arguably due to the library binding. 'The Sanity of Art' was an expansion of Shaw's 1895 highly critical review of Max Nordau's Degeneration (1892) in Liberty, 'A Degenerate's View of Nordau'. In both versions, Shaw took to task the degenerate theories that were rife at the turn of the C20th, however, he offers an apology for his incivility to Nordau in the expanded version.
