About This Item
Philadelphia & New York: J. B. Lippincott Company, 1953. First Edition, Second Impression. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. Brown cloth over boards, title stamped in silver and red onto top board and spine, top edge stained black, colored endpapers, 8vo (8 inches tall), pp. 254. Volume with spine ends softened, slight slant, text edges toned with offset from letter to pre-title page. Price-intact DJ with toning to edges and spine, chips to spine ends, small nicks to corners and a 1 inch closed puncture to back panel.
Inscribed and signed by Ullman on the pre-title page to author and publisher William Sloane, who published Ullman's Kingdom Of Adventure: Everest, in 1947 "To Bill - Still room on the shelf?" alluding prehaps Ullman's choice of a different publisher for this particular work. Also included is a typed letter signed by Ullman to William Sloane's wife, Julie dated in the same year of publication, which reads in part "... what a bum am I for neglecting to include you on the fly-leaf of 'Karakorum'. The next Ullman opus, madam, will be all yours - and to hell with that man from Funk & Wagnalls." An interesting group, showing the association between the author and one of his publishers. Letter near fine with two folds, a few tiny spots and a single crease to the upper corner. The Dust jacket artwork by George Salter, with "... at least I have now told a tale that I have had to tell. And I have exorcised a ghost." printed onto the back panel.
