Charles Gilpin, London., 1849. First edition. Octavo. pp xii, 370, [2] adverts. 8 tissue-guarded plates, six of which are hand-coloured. Original brown cloth decorated in gilt and in blind. Contains the first printing of W.M. Thackeray's drinking song "The Three Sailors". In his diary, Thackeray, when he was in Rome, makes mention of "spending the night smoking with the Artist banditti" one of whom was Bevan who later wrote a book on smoking.Cloth at head and tail of spine a little frayed and with short tears to upper joint. Very good.
