About This Item

New York: Simon and Schuster, 1935. First Edition (NAP) . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good-. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Author; Georg Salter. Bound in tan cloth backed with a smooth silver cloth; titles in black. Corresponding 1935 dates to the title and copyright pages; no additional printings. The dust wrapper is signed "Salter", indicating the recent German immigrant Georg Salter (1934 - Salter did not add the "e" to his first name until he took US citizenship in 1940). The author and her husband travel along the inland waterways of Europe. The book carries whimsical line drawing illustrations by the author. This copy shows very light of edgewear; the binding has a slight shelf slant. There is a gift inscription to the front free endpaper, otherwise the volume is unmarked. The wrapper has moderate edgewear with light soil and several short tears (1/2" or less), along with a pinpoint hole in the rear gutter. It is not price-clipped. The wrapper is a very early example of the art of Georg Salter after his immigration to the United States. His career as artist, calligrapher and teacher would soar in the 1940s. A clean, tight copy with the jacket now in mylar.
