About This Item
London: Elkin Mathews Ltd, 1924. 10th. hardback. Very good, no d/j, with blue clothbound boards, gilt spine titling bright; a little bumping; untrimmed pages clean and unmarked (a little tanning on endpapers), binding tight.. 12mo (190 x 130 / 7_"" x 5""). Masefield, an orphan who attended Warwick School, went to work on the HMS Conway. During that time, Masefield learned much about sea lore. This collection showcases some of his experiences that he wrote extensively about in his journals, as he dealt with sunstroke, witnessed a norcturnal rainbow, and saw so many types of creatures such as porpoises and flying fish. The ballads are a delight to read, full of strong imagery about the natural world that he experienced first-hand.
