Salome: A Tragedy in One Act

by Oscar Wilde

Condition: Very Good +/Very Good -

New York: E.P. Dutton & Co, 1927. Hardcover. Very Good +/Very Good -. John Vassos. The 1927 1st trade edition, in a crisp example of the John Vassos-illustrated dustjacket. Solid and VG+ (with just a touch of spotting to the boards) in a bright, price-clipped, VG- dustjacket, with light staining along the spine crown and light soiling to the panels. A bit of creasing --and several small closed tears-- at the panel edges as well. Still though, very presentable and brilliantly illustrated thruout in his dramatic Modernist style by John Vassos.

Salome is a tragic play written by Oscar Wilde, which tells the biblical story of Salome. Salome dances the Dance of the Seven Veils so well that she receives a boon from her stepfather Herod Antipas. Much to his dismay and her mother's delight she requests the head of John the Baptist on a silver platter. Though John is a favorite of Herod and under his protection, Herod cannot rescind his boon.Wilde originally wrote the play in French, and it was translated three years later into English.

I have number 183. This is a wonderful illustration book. Every page is a work of art not to mention the Wilde part of it.
