About This Item

Collins., 1959. 1st. Ed.. 8vo. Nr. fine hardback in thor. vg. / nr. fine dw. Not price clipped. With the signature of James Fisher to ffep., one of the four founders of the New Naturalist series. Billy Collins took over the running of Collins in 1936. He had a keen interest in natural history and had am ambition to publish a quality series of natural history books. Billy Collins and Wolfgang Foges first approached Julian Huxley about the concept. Then, in 1942, the three men met with James Fisher and from there, the New Naturalist series was conceived. Huxley and Fisher formed the nucleus of the editorial board, matching subjects to authors and seeing books to publication. Fisher went on to write The Fulmar (1952) and was co-author of Sea-Birds with Ronald Lockley.
