About This Item

London; Faber and Faber Ltd., 1936., 1936. Hard Cover. FIRST THUS. Octavo, pp. 322, [2]. 16 full-page colour plates by C.F. Tunnicliffe, plus fifty head and tailpieces and illustrated title page. Publishers' blue/grey silk with silver titles and salmon motif to spine; top edge silver; emerald green pictorial endpapers by Tunnicliffe; unclipped pictorial dust-jacket also designed by Tunnicliffe. Spine and top edge of boards lightly sunned. Pictorial bookplate with robin motif to verso ffep; no annotation or inscriptions; contents remarkably clean and crisp. Jacket lightly soiled to white background, with small loss (approx half an inch) to lower rear edge, several nicks and creases and very minor loss at spine tips. A Near Fine copy in Very Good jacket. The first trade edition was published the previous year, this is the first printing with Tunnicliffe's full-page colour illustrations which very much bring the tale to life. Scare, especially so in Tunnicliffe's vivid dust-jacket.
