"On the bank of the little River Wye, just before it enters Georgian Bay, there stood from 1639 to 1649 the first European settlement in inland North America. This was Sainte-Marie-aux-Hurons, Residence of the Jesuit Mission to the Huron Indians. Not far away St Jean de Brebeuf and St Gabriel Lalement died their heroic deaths. The story of the missionary-explorers is well known, but until an expedition sponsored by the University of Western Ontario and the Society of Jesus, and headed by Wilfrid Jury, investigated the ground between 1948 and 1951, the character and extent of the headquarters was barely suspected.....
