About This Item

London: Cobden-Sanderson , 1936. First edition. Cloth. Very Good Indeed/Good. 9" by 5.5". Not Stated . A bright first edition of Vita Sackville-West's fascinating biography of the national heroine of France, Joan of Arc. In the very scarce dust wrapper. The first trade edition of this biography, published simultaneously to the first signed limited edition in 1936. A brilliant and well-researched biography of the heroine of France, Joan of Arc. Vita Sackville-West examines the mystery around Joan of Arc, trying to find out who she really was. A serious study that attempts o give clearly and simply the main historical facts. Vita's first full-sized biography, written with the charming poetic touch that characterises her writing. In the very scarce, price-clipped dust wrapper. Illustrated with nine plates and four maps, one of which is folding. Collated, complete, with the frontispiece loose but present.  In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally very smart with only minor shelf wear and some bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. With the book society bookplate to the front free endpaper. The dust wrapper is price clipped and smart with some shelf wear and chipping, as well as a minor loss to the head of the spine, which is slightly sunned. Internally, firmly bound. With a faint minor spotting only to the first and last few leaves; otherwise, the pages are bright and clean. Illustrated with nine plates and four maps, one of which is folding. Collated, complete, with the frontispiece loose but present. Very Good Indeed
