Light foxing and moderate tanning to pages and plates. More prominent to text block edges, pastedowns and free endpapers. Moderate cracking to gutters causing some looseness to binding but pages remain attached. Boards have minor corner bumping and edgewear with mild staining, tanning and scuffing overall. Prominent splitting to joints. Spine has heavier tanning with soft crushing to ends.

Dramatic wall sized World War I recruitment poster produced for the US Navy Recruiting Bureau, this poster depicts sailors in a lifeboat, with one figure gesturing to a submarine. Sir Frank Brangwyn (1867-1956) was born in Belgium but based in London as an artist and illustrator. Minor creasing to corners and center.

Contemporary binding by Onrock and Son in full red crushed morocco with raised bands, gilt titles and decoration to spine; period three-masted tall ship made from brown and white leather onlays to centre of upper with elaborate gilt-stamped drawings, within a stylised gilt frame with gilt branches and green leaves. Branches and leaves motif repeated in gilt as dentelles, with yellow silk end papers. Contents clean, binding lightly handled. A near fine copy in a superb decorative binding.
