Spanish. Colorful plates and numerous B/W engravings. Reading copy only. Edgeworn and corners bumped. Front joint just starting at tips. Rear joint split about halfway from head. Page edge gilt quite worn. Book nearly disbound; hinges broken, text block nearly detached, and binding loose with many pages and signatures detached or loosening. Endpages missing at front and rear. Front pastedown chipped at bottom corner, and both pastedowns loosening. Frontis illustration of Pope Leo XIII torn at gutter, frayed, and quite creased. Major tears to several pages. Spine cracked in multiple places. Tissue guards largely present but torn, and many have partial pencil tracings of the plates they protect. Oil stain to gutter foot of about pages 433-548.
