About This Item

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1901. Henry James (1843-1916) wrote this most intriguing of the late novels just prior to "The Wings of the Dove" and "The Ambassadors." This tale of sexual energy baffled many of the earlier critics, but now receives more serious scrutiny. This is a Near Fine copy of the First American Edition, which precedes the English version. Not common. Smooth tan cloth binding, ruled and lettered in gilt. Clean text; 319 pages. There is a bookplate on the front paste-down and a signature/stamp opposite the Title Page, else a Fine copy. There is no dustjacket; rather, this copy is protected by a custom slipcase with a leather spine; ruled, with four raised bands, all filled with gilt. The open side of the slipcase and the head and foot of the spine have some rubbing; still, an attractive item. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. First American Edition.. Hard Cover. Near Fine/No Jacket.
