About This Item

New York, New York, U.S.A. : Houghton Mifflin, 1995. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Fine/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Winner of the1995 National Book Award for Fiction, and a nominee for the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction Best Book He is relentlessly defiant. He is exceedingly libidinous. His appetite for the outrageous is insatiable. He is Mickey Sabbath, the aging, raging powerhouse whose savage effrontery and mocking audacity are at the heart of Philip Roth's astonishing new novel. Sabbath's Theater tells Mickey's story in the wake of the death of his mistress, an erotic free spirit whose adulterous daring exceeds even his own. Once a scandalously inventive puppeteer, Mickey is now in his mid-sixties and besieged by ghosts - of his mother, his beloved brother, his vanished first wife, his mistress of thirteen years. Bereft and grieving, he embarks on a turbulent journey back into his past, one that brings him to the brink of madness and extinction. But no matter how ardently he courts death, he is too exuberantly alive to succeed at dying. SABBATH'S THEATER is a comic creation of epic proportions, and Mickey Sabbath is its gargantuan hero. Fine, first edition, first printing, in very good (intact but with a front cover creaase and some rubbing) mylar-protected dust jacket, [Not remainder-marked or price-clipped] L122

Synopsis

Philip Milton Roth is an American novelist. Roth became one of the most honored authors of his generation. In this 1995 winner of the National Book Awards, Mickey Sabbath is a lecherous, unproductive former puppeteer with a strong inclination toward whores, adultery and casual encounters. He takes great pleasure in manipulating the people around him and enjoys having the power to have them play the same role as his puppets. The loss of his long-term sexual partner, Drenka, hastens a crisis in his life and he wonders if he should simply take his own life. Sabbath’s Theater is a strange psychological experience and depicts an interesting, fascinating perspective on the values of today’s society.

We specialize in collectible, contemporary signed first editions. First edition means the first printing. (Later printings of the first edition are typically not printed on acid-free paper, and should be avoided by collectors.) Signatures are obtained by us in person. Inscribed books sold by us may contain a line, a phrase, or a sketch that the author has chosen to add. Our signed books are not dedicated to anybody in particular (not to your grandmother, your Aunt Gladys, your ex-lover or your former cellmate), except in the rare case of a presentation copy from an author to a noteworthy person. All our books are hardcover, unless the book is an Advance Reading Copy, Uncorrected Proof, or PBO. You can expect that the books we send you will be as described, and in a physical condition worthy of the author’s having signed them. We do not sell remainder-marked books, signed or otherwise
