About This Item

London: T. Fisher, 1923. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 8" by 5.5". None. A first edition of Joseph Conrad's penultimate novel, The Rover A first edition, first impression of Joseph Conrad's penultimate novel, The Rover. A first impression of this work, as identified by the missing 'g' in go at the second line of page 221. Set against the backdrop of the French Revolution, Napoleon's rise to power, and the French-English rivalry in the Mediterranean, the novel follows Peyrol and the attempts of the Republican gunner to withdraw from a blood filled life. The novel was adapted into an Italian film in 1967. Joseph Conrad was a British Polish novelist and writer, famous for his heavily debated work Heart of Darkness, which became the focus of postcolonial critics in the last quarter of the 20th century. Ink inscription to the recto of the front endpaper reads, 'Rosamond Walagh. England. 1924'. In the publisher's original green cloth binding. Externally, smart. Lightly rubbed to the boards, with some marginal bumping to the head of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Foxed to the front and rear, with the odd spot to the fore edge. Pages are otherwise generally clean and bright. Very Good
