London: T. Fisher Unwin Ltd,, 1923. First trade edition, first impression, of the author's final complete novel. This edition follows the American limited edition and the original serialization in the Pictorial Review of the same year. The epigraph on the title page is also inscribed on Conrad's gravestone: "Sleep after toyle, port after stormie seas, Ease after warre, death after life, does greatly please" (Edmund Spenser). "Though Conrad was buried with Catholic obsequies, the inscription is a reminder of the radical scepticism which gives so much power to his writings; and, furthermore, by providing a reminder of Peyrol in The Rover, who lives and dies by his work as a seaman, the words appropriately recall the dual career of Conrad, the seaman turned writer, who was still toiling at his creative writing in the season of his death" (ODNB). Octavo. Original green cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt. With dust jacket. Publisher's Conrad flyer loosely inserted. Spine dulled, edges and outer leaves foxed, else clean; jacket slightly soiled, light creasing at lower edges, still sharp: a very good copy in near-fine jacket.
