Hardcover. 1st Edition. 152 pages, repair to the original rear board retaining its original cloth spine, inner hinges repaired, pages uniformly foxed, rear endpapers stained, inner edge of first few pages repaired not effecting text, top edge of title page repaired. This copy has the corrected text. Winter and Johnson describe their journey to Oregon and California in 1843 and their return in 1845. Included is a guide for other emigrants, (instructions, supplies, travel, etc.) Mintz 259, " One of the best early overland narratives and one of the two contemporaneously printed accounts of the 1843 migration to Oregon." Howes J142, Graff 2221, Wagner-Camp 122, "Overton Johnson, and William H. Winter left Independence on May 25th, 1843 and arrived at Oregon City on November 13. In June of 1844, Winter joined a party traveling to California. He left California in May of 1845, crossed the Sierra Nevada by the Truckee route, and at Soda Springs on the Bear River in southeastern Idaho, met Johnson, who had left Oregon in April. Both men arrived at Westport on August 29." Overall a respectable copy of an item normally found with condition issues..
