About This Item

New York: Ecco / Harpercollins, 2006. First American edition. Hardcover. Good/good. Signed without inscription by the author on the title page. A good copy but previous reader opened it widely at the photo insert - binding intact but shaken and with a crease to the spine corresponding to the photo section. Remainder stripe to the bottom of the text-block edge, and light bumping and wear to the corners and spine tips. Pages are clean and unmarked. The dustjacket is more just a 1/3 height wrap around price intact and a bit of discoloration on the inside of the spine panel. 475 pp., indexed. A history of the slaves who fled their plantations to fight in the revolutionary war.

Synopsis

Rough Crossings: Britain, the Slaves and the American Revolution is a history book and television series by Simon Schama. This gives an account of the history of thousands of enslaved African Americans who escaped to the British cause during the American War of Independence. It tells of the legal battles in England that established that slavery was not legally valid in England itself, how the British government offered freedom to enslaved African Americans if they would fight for the king.
