About This Item

Dawsons of Pall Mall, London, 1969 reprint of 1954 first edition. 2 vols, 2-tone cloth, 8vo,. xx, 400 + viii, 401-839 pp, 60 plates. 2,739 entries. A valuable reference source based on a splendid collection of 18th century works, particularly strong in literature and history, which was largely built up by individual acquisitions in the 1930s and 1940s.. Before preparation of this catalogue, Lord Rothschild sent a written proposal of his plan to no fewer than 21 bibliographers or other experts (Carter, Greg, Jackson, Keynes, Munby etc etc) to obtain their advice and suggestions for improvement. The result is a splendid work, with useful bibliographical detail on the 2,739 principal entries, including title-page transcriptions, collations, notes, provenance, references in bibliographies, etc. Top edge slightly dust-stained, minor tape-marks to endpapers, otherwise a Very Good set.
