Illustrated front cover, showing a Roman mosaic of Ganymede and the Eagle, with black writing on the front panel and spine. Apart from a couple of foxing spots to the front free end page and half title page, the book shows no damage. " This book traces the growth of Roman belief on primitive to take Religion. It shows how, with the expansion of empire, Rome opened up to a great influx of exotic religion and philosophy and these are also described. Epicureanism, Stoicism, Mithraism, the cult of Isis and other creeds all struggled for ascendancy until finally giving way to the new import from the east: Christianity."
