Off print from Harper's Magazine where it appeared as Joshua Goodenough's Old Letter. "Merle Johnson says this is the rarest Remington illustrated item - this reprint from Harper's Magazine was probably limited to 100 copies." – Jeff Dykes. "Probably the rarest of all Remington books." - Merle Johnson.

"The excessively rare first separate edition, and the first copy to appear at public sale. In immaculate condition. This narrative was written by Remington himself, although his name did not appear as its author. The story is constructed in the form of a letter supposed to have been written by a Rogers Ranger in 1798, and appears under the title Joseph Goodenough's Old Letter. The Remington illustrations comprise four full-page plates and one smaller drawing. Remington avowed his authorship by reprinting both the text and illustrations in his Crooked Trails, published in 1898, using the original magazine title." – Parke-Bernet Galleries, First Editions of American and English Authors. Including the Collections of Richard Curle Ralph W. Thorne. 1938.
