Boston: James R. Osgood & Company,, 1876. First edition in book form of the author's first novel. It was originally printed in serial form in the Atlantic Monthly between January and December 1875 before being published in book form in 1876. The book introduced the character of Christina Light, who reappeared as the protagonist in the 1886 novel The Princess Casamassima. Octavo. Original reddish-brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt, brown coated endpapers. Housed in blue cloth chemise within quarter morocco slipcase. A little soiled and rubbed with a few peripheral nicks, contents a little toned and shaken: a very good copy. Edel & Laurence A3a; Supino 3.2.0.
