Santa Cruz: Kayak Books, (1971). First edition, one of 1200 copies, this inscribed & signed by Benedikt ("Michael") on the first blank page & in full on the title page.. 8vo, 38 & [1] pp. including 6 color plates. Publisher's pictorial stiff paper wraps.
Trace edge wear, lightly soiled, hint of darkening in the upper margin, otherwise Fine.
Presents an interesting assortment of French Surrealist poet Robert Desnos' work. Desnos, a member of the French Resistance during World War II, was deported to Auschwitz, then Buchenwald, and eventually Terezнn where he died of typhoid a month after liberation. Translator Michael Benedikt, a noted poet in his own right who also supplies the Introduction, describes this copy in his presentation inscription as the "official version." Throughout, he adds manuscript corrections, notes, and additional lines of verse.
