About This Item

Austin: Texas Game, Fish, and Oyster Commission, 1939., 1939. First edition. First separate edition. 8vo. Inked presentation at top of title page: "For Nella Mae Dieter, from her paisano, J. Frank Dobie." Pictorial wrappers, [2], 31 pp. Dobie describes a most interesting bird. Original appearance was in Texas Folk-Lore Society publication for 1939 titled "In the Shadow of History." Price Daniel, Jr. says "Not labeled as such, but sent by the Dobies to a few friends as a Christmas pamphlet in 1939." Original blue wrappers now have all the edges uniformly browned, with a tiny chip to top front corner, else a near fine, tight and internally clean and bright copy.
