About This Item
New York: Macmillan, 1927. Octavo. 492 pages. Illustrated. Boldly signed by the author Padraic Colum on the front endpaper. The author journeys over the brown roads of Erin; roads where the heather of the bog runs into the wayside grass. He shows us these roads, the fields, the small, thatched cottages, with their stacks of peat outside, and the people he meets or passes on his way. But the midland peasants and bogs, with their daily life and stories, are simply given. He tells tales of Connacht and Donegal, with their rich literary associations, but with their stony land and rain-charged winds with the tales of the legends of fairies. From there he visits the Abbey Theatre and adds intimate stories of Yeats, O'Casey, Joyce, Stephens, Synge, and others. Colum provides information on such topics as the Gaelic language revival, the Irish schools, the Irish Free State since its beginning in 1919, and many an appealing little tale of Irish family life and the myths and fairy-lore still living in the hearts of the people. A fine bright copy bound in green linen lettered in git, spine lettering gilt, in unclipped pictorial dust jacket, just a bit of offsetting to front endpaper from jacket. An exceptionally nice copy.
