A treatment of a neglected aspect of American social life and important facet of Louisiana history, a study of a half-century (1850-1900) when sports moved from a minor to a major role in New Orleans play habits. The 1870s, 80s, and 90s saw the organization of clubs and teams by the dozens--bicycling clubs, tennis clubs, athletic clubs, rowing clubs, etc.
