Strahan, et al, 1765. ~TITLE CONTINUES: The Ninth Edition, To which is added, A Sermon on the Care of the Soul ~Original full calf, raised bands and gilt ruling to spine. Gilt decor (much rubbed) to page edges. Chipping to base of spine, with small loss (c. 2cm, revealing pasteboard) to leather at base of rear board by spine. Mild wear to boards, with slight bump to top corner of front board. 8vo (13.5 x 20.8cm).. Endpapers cracked at gutters, but hinges sound. Front free endpaper partially detached. Rear free endpaper largely detached but holding. Offset browning and minor sealing wax marks to endpapers. Owner's signature to front free endpaper: 'Benj(ami)n Dickson His Book 1775'. Decorative initials, head-pieces, and tail-pieces throughout. Very mild dampstaining to lower outer corner of final 8pp. Minor worm damage near top gutter of c. pp. 9-121, largely pinprick holes with no damage to text. ESTC N48067. Collated: A8, a4, b2, B-2E8, 2F4, 2G2. Philip Doddridge (1702-1751), Independent minister and writer. The Rise and Progress of Religion in the Soul, first published 1745, was among Doddridge's 'most influential publications in his lifetime' (ODNB). It was dedicated to Isaac Watts (pp. iii-xiii this edition), who been a driving force behind the creation of what he envisaged as a 'small Book for the Poor' and remarked on the finished work that 'I am not ashamed, by what I have read, to recommend it as the best treatise on practical religion which is to be found in our language (13 Sept 1744, Correspondence, 4.356-7)' (ODNB). ~Robust packaging.
