Harry Griffiths Clapperton was born in 1873 in England. His father Walter was also a glass cutter and after the family emigrated to America in 1884 he learnt the trade at W. L. Libbey & Son Co. in Toledo, Ohio. Moving to Toronto in 1900 he worked for Gowans, Kent & Co. Ltd. before striking out in 1904 with salesman Nathaniel Frederick Gundy to create Gundy Clapperton and Co., Limited. Within a few short years they were to become one of the best known glass-cutting companies in Canada during the golden age of Canadian cut-glass (1900 -1920s). Sometime between 1915 and 1920 the two parted ways and the company continued as Clapperton's Limited. The "G" was dropped from their cloverleaf trademark leaving just the "C" in the centre.
