About This Item

1928. Colorful tales of the early history of central Kansas are recalled in this 61-page booklet titled: Rice County, Kansas, USA. The 11" x 8.5" spiral-bound booklet is a reprint of The Story of Early Rice County, written by Horace Jones and originally published in 1928. Because of our larger format, we have printed two pages of the original book on each sheet and still managed to increase the print size. The tri-color front cover is printed on 80# card stock and has been protected with a vinyl sheet. The text is printed on 60# opaque paper. Among the many subjects included are: Early geology and pre-historic animals; Early exlorers, possibly including Coronado; Indian life in Rice County; Buffalo herds; the Old Santa Fe Trail and it's importance to Rice County; Memories of the Old Stone Corral and other landmarks; the little-known Massacre at Plum Buttes; an episode involving Dick Wooton, famous plainsman; Treasure Legends; Phantom Towns -- Wildwood, Violet Springs, Glen Sharrold, Allegan and Voyls; Miscellaneous facts about the County's Origin -- Atlanta, the first town, the geographic center of Kansas; How Lyons became the county seat; Various first, such as the first murder, the first newspaper, etc.; the Grasshopper invasion; the coming of the Santa Fe Railroad; Anecdotes of the Plains, and other items of interest.. Limited Edition Reprint. Spiral/Comb . New/No Jacket. 11" x 8.5". Private Press.
