First edition in English of Hans Maier's study of the political upheavals of the 19th century, from the University of Notre Dame Press International Studies series. Consists of: Christian Democracy: Past and Present, Democracy and Church: The Revolutionary Attempt at Unity (1789-94), The Traditionalist Contradiction (1795-1829), Liberal Catholicism and Christian Democracy (1830-1850), Christian Democracy in the Ralliement (1891-1901). The text is prefaced with quotes by Tocqueville, Lacordaire, and Leo XIII. Translated by Emily M. Schossberger, with the author's Preface to the American Edition, dated "Munich/March, 1969." With an Appendix ("Liberal Catholicism," "Social Catholicism," "Christian Democracy"), an extensive Bibliography, and an Index.
