About This Item

Cincinnati: Middleton, Strobridge, & Co, 1859. Portrait. Steel plate engraving. Image measures 5 1/4" x 4"<br/> <br/> Rev. Francis Burns was a notable figure in the Methodist Episcopal Church (M.E.C.) and its missionary work in Western Africa during the 19th century, being the first Missionary bishop and the first African-American bishop in the church's history. He was sent as a missionary to Liberia in 1834, where he worked to establish and strengthen the church's presence in the region. After briefly returning to New York in 1844, he returned to Liberia where he spent the remainder of his life, being elected bishop in 1858. This portrait was made after an ambrotype by Brady, engraved by J.C. Buttre and printed by Middleton, Strobridge, & Co. It was published in The Ladies Repository of 1859. In very good condition, with some scattered foxing.<br/> <br/>
