About This Item

A La Haye [The Hague]: chez Pierre Gosse Junior et Fils, 1784. First edition. Text in French, printed in two columns. Woodcut armorial headpiece (coat of arms of The Hague) and an initial on the title page. Paper somewhat tanned. Folded once. Stain on first page. Otherwise in fine condition.. First edition. Text in French, printed in two columns. Woodcut armorial headpiece (coat of arms of The Hague) and an initial on the title page. [4] p.; ca. 165 × 205 mm. A seemingly unrecorded Washington letter to the Dutch Patriots.

Letter of thanks by George Washington (on p. [4]) dated June 7, 1784, in Mount Vernon, as a response to the address of "congratulations on the glorious revolution which freed America" which appeared earlier in the gazette. Washington hopes for a "new source of congratulations" when the Dutch efforts to free their oppressed country succeeded, referring to the struggles of the Dutch Patriots against the Orangists.

Gazette de la Haye was published between 1744 and 1790 and was an early French-language Dutch gazette, with the content of political, military and economic news from all over Europe.
