About This Item

London & Toronto: J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd, 1920. First English Edition. Cloth. Very Good. 8vo, green cloth with blindstamp Aldine House emblem on cover & gold lettering on spine, 416 pages. Printed in the same year as the First American Edition by Temple Press, Letchworth, England--so marked at bottom of last page. Previous owner's neat presentation in ink on free front endpaper. The Garden City & New York edition published by Doubleday, Page & Co. in 8vo also during 1920 is the First Edition. It was published before the first English edition, though in the same year. Conrad wrestled with this Malaysian story for over 20 years. This novel completed what is sometimes called the "Lingard trilogy." In terms of chronology, however, this tale preceeds Almayer's Folly and An Outcast of the Islands.

Synopsis

Civil war rages between the native tribes of the Malay straits. Captain Tim Wingard sides with the Rajah Hassim. But as is the case with so much in the Far East, nothing is quite straightforward and events unfold by indirection.
