Putnam's Sons; New York. Complete set in 3 volumes. Each volume features numerous full-page engravings; gilt top page edges; decorative floral end papers. From the Introduction: "The design which has controlled the present collection has been to make such selections from the great orations of American history as shall show most clearly the spirit and motives which have actuated its leaders, and to connect them by a thread of commentary which shall convey the practical results of the conflicts of opinion revealed in the selections."
The set features orations from eminent Americans such as Patrick Henry, Alexander Hamilton, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Josiah Quincy, Henry Clay, John C. Calhoun, Daniel Webster, Stephen Douglas; Abraham Lincoln (including The Gettysburg Address), Thaddeus Stevens, Jefferson Davis, Henry Ward Beecher, and many more.
