Description:
1856 1ed Narrative of Expedition American Squadron Perry Hawkes JAPAN China MAPSFirst and only complete edition of Commodore Perry's Japan Expedition!
Matthew Perry was one of the most important American Naval officers during the 19th-century. While he was notable for his involvement in the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War, his most famous accomplishment came as the leader of a voyage to Japan beginning in 1852 aboard the East India Squadron. This series of short visits sought to pursue Japanese trade treaties, but Perry and his crew discovered much more – Japanese and Chinese cultures, politics, coal mining and agriculture, as well as attempts at occupation of Formosa. While many events came from this expedition, according to Hill,
"the most important result was that the visit contributed to the collapse of the feudal regime and to the modernization of Japan"
The events of this expedition were recorded by Perry and Francis Hawks in the 1856 account "Narrative of the Expedition of an… Read More

Laroque after a design by Jacques Grasset de Saint-Sauveur. This is an early prospectus with 36 parts and 109 plates showing samples from all volumes of the proposed set: Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas. The prospectus or "Programme et Plan de l'Ouvrage" appears at the front, and the title page midway through the volume. The complete set was to comprise 48 parts with six plates each in four volumes (288 plates) beginning from 1 August 1792. It was eventually published in 1795-96 in Paris and included some 433 plates in four volumes. The literary part was to be written by Jean-Francois Cornu. The images were copied from 18th century travel books, most notably Captain James Cook's Voyages. There is an element of charming fantasy about many of the images along with the remarkably accurate details. The dancing…

Description:
Indianapolis: Dog Ear Publishing, January 2013. Trade Paperback. Fine. Slight reading wear to corners, otherwise pristine. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. Not damaged. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.

Description:
London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme & Brown, 1823. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. pp: [viii]ix-xii [1]2-544. FIRST EDITION. Bound in brown half-leather over marbled boards, title in gilt within a red title piece. The first edition of the author's first book. William Wilson (1772-1849) inherited a substantial sum from an uncle, and decided to indulge his passion for travel. He travelled throughout Europe and The Middle East and wrote a series of books. This was his first, and it was the most popular, going through several editions. This is a good copy as all plates, including the frontispiece, have been excised. The boards show moderate wear, heavier at the spine ends. The front hinge is cracked. The text block is mainly clean with a few marks of unknown origin.
