About This Item

Washington, D.C.: Government Printing Office, 1867. Front cover lettered in black. This is Circular No. 7, a report of the treatment of severe leg wounds in the War of the Rebellion. Dr. Otis was Assistant Surgeon and Brevet Lt. Colonel in the US Army. His report was directed by Surgeon General J.K. Barnes. The report is found on pp. 8-87 with sections on historical summary, a discussion of individual cases with listings by type, opinions of surgeons, , and concluding observations. Following the text material are nine full-page plates, five of which are chromolithographs vivid in detail; and four are black and white photographic reproductions. Each is protected by a tissue-guard. Minor damp-stain on margins of several plates. Final plate has a 2" tear at free margin without paper loss. Fore-edge of the title-page is a bit darkened with a small chip missing at the very bottom. Thirty numbered illustrations are found throughout the text. A comprehensive examination of a devastating battlefield injury-the plates are spectacular and revealing of the nature of the injury. Prior to the Civil War, almost all of these kinds of wounds were fatal, usually from infection and blood loss. Early amputation, although ablative, saved some lives. But fatality rate remained very high, as high as 84%.. First Edition.. Rebound in Grey Buckram.. Quarto.
