About This Item

London: William Pickering, 1852 First edition. Full tan smooth calf, gilt double-ruled covers, gilt-decorated spine with black morocco label, marbled edges. . Small octavo. Spine a bit rubbed, a few light spots on front cover. A very good copy. Mary Kelty (1789-1873) was the daughter of an Irish surgeon. Influenced by the novels of Jane Austen, she published her novel The Favourite of Nature (1821) anonymously, dedicating it to Joanna Baillie. It was favorably received by Harriet Martineau. She followed it with several other novels, but then, after the sudden deaths of her parents, turned to religious pursuits, trying out several sects and going to faith healers. She wrote on Quaker themes in Early Days in the Society of Friends (1840) and Memoirs of the Lives and Persecutions of the Primitive Quakers (1844), and explored the workings of religion in individual lives in Facts and Feelings (1841). The present work, her autobiography, was highly regarded.

About Michael R. Thompson, Booksellers, ABAA/ILAB

Our office is located in Los Angeles on West Third Street, between the Beverly Center and Farmer's Market. Though we gave up an open shop after more than thirty years, we welcome serious customers and dealers. We are normally open from 10 to 6 Monday through Saturday. Since some of our less expensive books are located in a temperature-controlled storage area offsite, you may want to call ahead of time to insure that the book you want to see will be available. We feature a stock strong in literature, history, Western philosophy, women's studies, education, history of science and fine printing and artists' books. We are members of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America and the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers. We have books from the 15th to the 20th century in all prices ranges. We do appraisals for income tax and insurance purposes. We purchase individual books and libraries. Proprietor: Carol Sandberg
