Toronto/Montreal: McClelland & Stewart Limited, 1967. 276 pp including bibliography and index. Frontispiece is a b/w portrait of Sir William F. Butler. Illustrated with b/w photos and maps. List of illustrations provided. Sir William butler served in the British Army for nearly half a century. During the first Riel Rebellion 1869-70 he acted as Intelligence Officer to the Commander of the Red River Expedition. At the request of the Canadian Government travelled through the Canadian West and submitted a report that led to the founding of the North-West Mounted Police. Following his Canadian adventures, he fought in the Ashanti and Zulu Wars. In 1898 he was appointed Commander-in Chief of the British Forces in South Africa. Butler deserves to be remembered not only as a brilliant soldier but as an author of many books, two of which are "The Great Lone Land" and "The Wild North Land". Name to ffep.
