About This Item

Madrid: Imp. J. Pérez Torres, 1929. Newspaper. 8p., folded tabloid newspaper format, 8.5x12.75 inches, slightly misfolded, evenly browned, horizontally creased, leaves unopened, edgeworn with a few small chips, 3/4 inch closed tear and small sticker scar on front wrap else good condition. Text in Spanish. Only one in OCLC as of 4/2021. The anti-clerical, Republican newspaper was founded as "El Motín" ("The Riot") by José Nakens and continued as "Reflejos de El Motín" by his daughter after his death in 1926. Nakens was admired by anarchists and briefly sheltered the anarchist fugitive Mateo Morral after his attempted assassination of Alfonso XIII, but was strongly anti-anarchist himself. The newspaper was published throughout the Primo de Riveria dictatorship. (Republicanism and Anticlerical Nationalism in Spain, Enrique Sanabria). This issue features a cover story on the artist Shum (pseudonym of Juan Bautista Archer), who was sentenced to death for his anarchist beliefs, and the campaign to pardon him. He was ultimately given a life sentence and was freed with the arrival of the Second Republic.
