About This Item

Paris: YMCA-Press, 1975. Special first reduced-size edition. Original publisher's leather cover. Dimensions: 11.8 x 16.5 cm. 627 pages. Text in Russian. A very good copy with a bit of soiled fore-edge.

A special reduced-size edition printed on thin, delicate paper for illegal distribution in the Soviet Union.

The first Parisian edition of A. Solzhenitsyn's scandalous memoir published in Russian in 1975 under the title Бодался телёнок с дубом (lit. "A Calf Head-butting with an Oak," an ironic phrase). The book provides an in-depth recollection of the release of One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich and the author's intricate association with the editor-in-chief, Aleksandr Tvardovsky. It also narrates Solzhenitsyn's unsuccessful endeavors to publish his other earlier works, Cancer Ward and The First Circle, the controversies that arose after he was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1970, and his subsequent expulsion from the Soviet Union.
