London: William Heinemann. 1896 [1895]. First UK edition, first printing. First UK edition, first printing. Hardcover issue. Publisher's original green cloth with white titles to the upper board and spine. Incorporating the upper cover of the wrappers issue, as called for. A very good copy, the binding firm with some bumping and small nicks to the spine tips and corners, the titles to the spine rubbed but legible. The contents are entirely complete and without loose or torn pages. The endpapers and text block edges are a little toned with the occasional corner crease or finger mark to the margins throughout. First published in abbreviated, serialised form by The Philadelphia Press in December 1894 and reprinted in approximately 550 newspapers and periodicals across America. The first edition in book form was published by Appleton in October 1895 and has never been out of print since. Crane's contract with Appleton allowed him to receive a flat ten percent royalty of all copies sold, however, the contract stipulated that he was not to receive royalties from any books sold in Great Britain, the first edition of which, offered here, was issued by Heinemann in November 1895 in both hardcover and wrappers as part of their Pioneer Series. The novel, a depiction on the cruelty of the American Civil War, features a young recruit who overcomes initial fears to become a hero on the battlefield. The book made Crane an international success.
