Articles in this set of issues include: [No. 1] Catholicism in Elizabethan Durham; Plowden, Englefield and Sandford: II, 1585-1609; Catholic Royalist Activities in the North, 1642-46; Iron Mining in Restoration Furness: The Case of Sir Thomas Preston; Fuga Saeculi or Holy Hatred of the World: John Donne and Henry Hawkins; Conformity Certificates Among the King's Bench Records: A Calendar; [No. 2] The Economic Consequences of Recusancy in Elizabethan Worcestershire; Catholicism in Jacobean Durham; The Oath Tendered; Elizabethan Priest-Holes - VI: The Escape of Charles II; The English College, Rome, under Italian Secular Administration, 1773-1798; Iron-Mining in Restoration Furness: The Case of Sir Thomas Preston, A Response; [No. 3] Catholics and Politics: The Worcestershire Election of 1604; Sir Richard Forster (?1585-1661); The Haggerstons: The Education of a Northumberland Family; British Diplomatic Relations with the Holy See, 1793-1830; [No. 4] The Movement of Clergy in the Diocese of Canterbury, 1552-62; The Irish Student Diaspora in the Sixteenth Century and the Early Years of the Irish College at Salamanca; The Correspondence of Edward Coleman, 1674-78; Catholic Officers in the Navy of James II; and The Early Life of Charles Butler (1750-83). In the history of England and Wales, recusancy was the state of those who refused to attend Anglican services; these individuals were known as recusants. The term, which derives ultimately from the Latin recusare (to refuse or make an objection) was first used to refer to those who remained loyal to the Roman Catholic Church and did not attend Church of England services, with a 1593 statute determining the penalties against 'Popish recusants.' The 'Recusancy Acts' began during the reign of Elizabeth I and were repealed in 1650. They imposed various types of punishment on those who did not participate in Anglican religious activity, such as fines, property confiscation, and imprisonment. Despite their repeal, restrictions against Roman Catholics were still in place until full Catholic Emancipation in 1829. In some cases those adhering to Catholicism faced capital punishment, and a number of English and Welsh Catholics executed in the 16th and 17th centuries have been canonised by the Catholic Church as Christian martyrs.
