About This Item
Lawrence, Kansas: Reconstruction. Good+. 1969. First Edition; First Printing. Newspaper. Church mailing label and postal markings on covers, no other markings. Lightly, evenly toned. Center creased. Light creasing at corners and a few small chips scattered throughout the text. This issue includes many shorter pieces on local politics and political repression in the Lawrence area and a two-column essay discussing the Black Panther Party free breakfast program, raising awareness to its activities in the area. ; Reconstruction was a counter-culture newspaper which published 9 issues from early spring through the end of the summer of 1969. The paper was a mix current events, poetry, art, and photography with a strong anti-authority political slant referring to police as "pigs", documenting the actions of militant groups, and generally inflammatory writing. The paper merged with the Kansas City Screw to form a new publication with the reader-chosen name of Vortex. Vortex would continue to publish into the early 70's. ; Folio 13" - 23" tall; 16 pages .
