About This Item

San Francisco: Joseph Winterburn & Co., 1878. Very Good condition. SEE PHOTOS. Previous owner's name stamp (3 times). Inner hinges are perfect. First Edition. Text is clean. NO underlining. NO margin notes. Bound in the original green cloth with blind stamped decorations and shiny gold lettering on the front cover. Woods traveled widely throughout the state, and comments freely on outlaws, gambling, mining, the inflationary effects of the Gold Rush on prices, fires, executions, women's rights, a female preacher, a steamboat explosion, Rev. Sylvester Woodbridge, Los Angeles, everyday life and living expenses, etc. Cowan 694. Adams 6 Guns 2448: "Rare… Contains some material on Joaquin Murietta." Kurutz 697: "A Presbyterian minister, Rev. Woods left New York for California with his wife and child on the ship Alice Tarlton in May 1849 and shipped around Cape Horn to San Francisco [when less than 20 families resided in the City]. Shortly thereafter, he went to Stockton and established a church for that community. His recollections are much more than an ecclesiastic history, as they give an articulate and human picture of life in that gateway to the Southern Mines." Rocq 17257. Cowan (I), p. 253, (II), p. 694. Decker 35: 196. Gudde p. 429. Mintz 625. Howell 50: 941. Norris 4263.. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good condition. 260pp.

About About Books

About Books (Genny and Michael Winne, proprietors, formerly of Parsippany, New Jersey) has been selling rare and OP books since 1985. Besides book fairs and mail-order catalogues, long-time collectors and dealers will remember our lengthy For Sale ads in the Antiquarian Bookman and similar magazines. Our inventory of over 40,000 volumes is especially strong in the specialties listed, but contains fine books in a variety of other fields as well. Because most of our books are stored in protective boxes, rather than on shelves, they cannot be viewed as a whole. If you wish to visit us to examine specific titles, please provide 24 hours notice and we will make them available for your inspection. Phone calls to (702) 750-2722 are welcome, but please, only between the hours of 8am and 10pm (west coast time).
