About This Item

Oxford, NY: Douglas & VanWagenen, Druggists and Grocers [ Van Wagenen ], 1869. First Edition. Good. First Edition. Single sheet broadside, printed on recto only. 8 3/8 x 15 3/8 inches (21.4 x 39.2 cm). Uniformly dampstained but in a non-offensive manner. Folds and staining, including two blue blotches. Some edgewear and folding. Text very readable. While it is clear from the top half of the broadside that Douglas & VanWagenen carry many lines of goods including dry goods, spices, toilet articles, etc the second half of the broadside is what we find most interesting. Here we find more than a dozen recipes for coloring, some very specific, some that apparently work with many of the colors the Druggists offer. Some are easy (coloring cotton greeen is simply dipping blue colored cotton into yellow), others far more complicated - the recipe for coloring black is 18 lines of instruction. An unusual topic for a broadside, especially with instructions offered in such detail.

W.H. Van Wagenen, druggist, commenced business in 1860, in company with Dr. George Douglas whose interest he bought at the expiration of eight years (History of Oxford NY).

Not in OCLC/Worldcat - we had this same example in 2017, and were fortunate enough to purchase it back recently from our customer.
