Sir Oliver Lodge's book about his son Raymond, who was killed in the First World War, is divided into three parts: his son's life and letters received from him while he was alive, an account of "supernormal" communications with him after his death, and Lodge's general consideration of life after death and communication with dead. Lodge writes that he feels justified in exposing intimate family matters and in risking the ridicule of skeptics in the hope that his book may help alleviate the grief of the many families who have lost loved ones during the war.
